Join us as we show you how to make cinnamon dough ornaments for your Ruby Red Fashion Friends dolls. This recipe will make ornaments that will last for years. They are not edible, but look and smell like the real thing!
You will need:
1/4 cup powdered cinnamon
3 tablespoons applesauce
1/2 tablespoon white glue
Bowl for mixing
Paper plate or cookie sheet lined with parchment paper
Small cookie cutters
Butter knife
Toothpick
Glitter
White glue
Thread or thin string
* Children should be supervised by a parent or guardian
Step 1: In a small bowl, mix the cinnamon, applesauce, and white glue. This is best mixed by hand but you can use a spoon or fork, at least initially. It should come together as a nice ball. If it’s too wet, add a touch more cinnamon; if it’s too dry, add a bit more applesauce.
Step 2: Flatten out your dough. You can pat this out with your hands or use a rolling pin. Get it about 1/4 thick or a little less. Then use your cookie cutters to cut out your shapes, or you can use a sharp knife to make your own designs.
Step 3: After they are cut out, use your butter knife like a spatula to move these to a paper plate or, if you are going to oven-dry them, a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Use the butter knife again to clean up the edges if they are rough looking.
Step 4: Use the toothpick to make a small hole for the thread. We made ours a solid 1/8 inch. Keep in mind the ornaments will shrink a little during drying so make the hole a little bigger than you need. Also, be mindful to leave about a 1/4 inch of dough surrounding the hole on all sides so it does not break easily after drying.
Step 5: Now dry them! You can leave them sitting out for a few days to dry, or you can bake them in a 200°F oven for a couple of hours. Ours took about 2 hours to dry. You can tell they are done when the color is uniform on both sides; if there is still a darker spot in the middle of the ornament then it needs more dry time.
Step 6: Now we get to use our white glue and glitter to decorate them! You could also try puff paints or acrylic paints. And of course, you could also leave them plain for a simpler look. Either way, these will smell so good and definitely bring the holiday spirit to your home.
Step 7: Once the glue/glitter has dried, cut a length of thread to run through the small hole and tie it into a loop. Don’t make the loop too big as these are meant for dolls!
